Pediatric Emergency Medicine

Dr. Alexie Puran is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Columbia University and since 2015 has been practicing as a Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, part of the largest public health care system in the United States. During this time, Dr. Puran has held several leadership positions including as Chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Associate Director of the Emergency Department.

Dr. Puran is board certified in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. He earned his Doctor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine after graduating from Stony Brook University with a double major in pharmacology and political science. He also earned a master’s in business administration from the University of Rochester. Dr. Puran completed a residency in Pediatrics at Jacobi Medical Center and a fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Puran is committed to transforming the human experience in healthcare and has worked to launch and served as Chair for a Patient Family Advisory Council, held a position as a Patient Physician Experience Officer, and now currently proudly serves on the Strategic Advisory Board and as a Co-Chair on the Physician Council at The Beryl Institute. He has also earned the degree of a Certified Patient Experience Professional (CPXP). Dr. Puran serves as the Director of Harlem Reads, an innovative program which promotes literacy for patients who are cared for in the Pediatric Emergency Department.

Dr. Puran conducts clinical research on improving the quality of care for children with asthma. He has been awarded a grant from TD Bank for his campaign entitled Attack Asthma in Kids, which seeks to improve asthma control by targeting health literacy. Dr. Puran was recently selected as a scholar of the COMMUNITY Investigator Development Core Program and awarded a $50,000 grant.

Dr. Puran has been recognized for his work on a recent project entitled, My Six-Word Story. This project was developed as a tool to improve resiliency among his colleagues’ working on the frontline during the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic. His project was featured in the Patient Experience Journal 2020 Special Issue, Sustaining a Focus on Human Experience in the Face of COVID-19 in an article he published entitled, My Six-Word Story: Power to Reconnect and Connect. In 2023, Dr.Puran’s My Six-Word Story was published in the book, Every Doctor: Healthier Doctors = Healthier Patients.

Dr. Puran has volunteered as a pediatrician with the organization, Operation Smile since 2014 with 27 programs in 14 countries. He has also taught Pediatric Emergency Medicine in India in New Delhi and Kolkata.
