Aside from the cosmetic deformity associated with orofacial clefts, children born with cleft lip and/or cleft palate face additional challenges beyond appearance. Orofacial clefts may be associated with various genetic syndromes, most commonly Velocardiofacial, Van der Woude, Stickler, and Pierre Robin syndromes. Additionally, several medical conditions may be encountered including airway obstruction, feeding difficulty, speech and language development delays, dental abnormalities, hearing problems, and psychosocial issues.
